Is self-exclusion right for you?

Signs it may be time to apply

Self-exclusion is a legal tool, not a last resort. Many people use it as a proactive step to protect themselves and their families.

You spend more than you intend

You set a limit before you go in, and you always exceed it. The amount keeps changing, but the result stays the same.

Gambling is covering expenses

You are gambling to recover losses, pay bills, or get out of debt. The next win is always the plan.

Your relationships are affected

Family, friends, or colleagues have noticed. You have hidden spending, lied about where you were, or argued about money.

You have tried to stop and could not

You have made promises to yourself or others. They did not hold. You need something stronger than willpower alone.

Gambling affects your work or health

Concentration, sleep, productivity, or mental health have changed. Gambling is taking up space that belongs elsewhere.

You want a legal barrier, not just a decision

You know what you need to do. You want the law on your side to help you hold that decision when it gets hard.

You do not need to be at a crisis point to apply. Self-exclusion is a prevention tool. The earlier you use it, the more it protects. It is free, confidential, and legally binding from the moment your application is submitted to the NGB.
What registration gives you

What self-exclusion does

Statutory self-exclusion under the National Gambling Act is one of the most effective evidence-based protection tools available in South Africa.

1

A legal barrier

Every licensed casino and gambling premises in South Africa is legally required to bar your entry. The barrier exists even on days when willpower does not.

2

National coverage

One application covers all 9 provinces and every licensed gambling operator. You do not apply separately to each venue or each province.

3

Legally binding

This is not a voluntary pledge. It is a statutory registration under the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004. It cannot be withdrawn during the chosen period.

4

Completely confidential

Your exclusion is shared only with the NGB, the Provincial Gambling Boards, and licensed operators for enforcement. It is not publicly accessible.

5

Free to apply

There is no cost to the applicant at any point. The process is funded entirely by Free Me South Africa. You should never pay to protect yourself.

6

Buys you time

The minimum period is 6 months. That distance between the impulse and the opportunity is often what makes the difference.

Simple process

Four steps to protection

Your application is processed by the National Gambling Board and transmitted to every licensed South African casino and all nine Provincial Gambling Boards.

Complementary Tools
Block gambling websites and apps

Self-exclusion bars physical entry to casinos. Add digital blocking to close the online gap. FMSA recommends two tools: Gamban (paid) and BetBlocker (free).

Commission notice: FMSA earns a 25% referral fee from Gamban subscriptions via our partner link. BetBlocker is entirely free with no commercial relationship. Full details.
